Strait of Gibraltar.

Two
Continents - Two Oceans. A Stand Up Paddling Adventure through an historical
15 Mile passage! The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow strait that connects
the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Spain in Europe
from Morocco in Africa.
The
02.06. will be our day of arrival in Tarifa and the official Start of
the Event will be a Welcome Cocktail at the Club Mistral Center in Tarifa
at 07.00 p.m.. After that, we´ll take you to a traditional spanish
Tappas Bar for Dinner and going to check out the Nightlife of Tarifa.
On the 03.06. we will start the day with a SUP Training Session along
the Coastline in Tarifa in order to get your paddle technique right and
prepare for the long distance paddle the next day. In the afternoon, we´ll
do a SUP Waveriding Introduction, either in Tarifa or El Palmar.
On the 04.06. we´re going to start the passage an hour before sunrise.
We´ll paddle together from Tarifas Atlantic Ocean side through the
Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediteranian Sea. The sunrise on the water
in between the two continents, the Atlantic Ocean in your back and the
Mediteranian Sea in front of you, is kind of a "once in a lifetime"
experience!
The passage will take approximately 5-6 hours (little breaks and drifting
passages included :) ), so we´ll be back in Tarifa some time during
the afternoon.
In the evening we´re going to have a beach BBQ, together with a
little presentation of the pictures of the day !
Departure is on the 05th of June some time after breakfast.
About the Strait of Gibraltar
Europe and Africa
are separated by 7.7 nautical miles (14.3 km) of ocean at the strait's
narrowest point. The Strait's depth ranges between 300 and 900 m (980
and 3,000 ft) which possibly interacted with the lower mean sea level
of the last major glaciation 20,000 years before present when the level
of the sea was believed to be lower by 110-120 m (360-390 ft). Ferries
cross between the two continents every day in as little as 35 minutes.
Through the strait, water generally flows more or less continually in
both an eastward and a westward direction. A smaller amount of deeper
saltier and therefore denser waters continually work their way westwards,
while a larger amount of surface waters with lower salinity and density
continually work their way eastwards . These general flow tendencies may
be occasionally interrupted for brief periods to accommodate temporary
tidal flow requirements, depending on various lunar and solar alignments.
Still, on the whole and over time, the balance of the water flow is eastwards,
due to an evaporation rate within the Mediterranean basin higher than
the combined inflow of all the rivers that empty into it.
The Strait of Gibraltar
- an historical passage
The
Mediterranean waters are so much saltier than the Atlantic waters that
they sink below the constantly incoming water and form a highly saline
layer of bottom water. This layer of bottom-water constantly works its
way out into the Atlantic as the Mediterranean outflow. The Mediterranean
outflow water layer can be traced for thousands of kilometres west of
the strait, before completely losing its identity.
During the Second World War, German U-Boats used the currents to pass
in and out of the Mediterranean Sea without detection, by maintaining
silence with engines off. From Sept 1941 to May of 1944 Germany managed
to send 62 U-boats into the Mediterranean. All these boats had to navigate
the dreaded British-controlled Straits of Gibraltar where 9 U-boats
were sunk while attempting passage and 10 more had to break off their
run due to damages. No U-boats ever made it back into the Atlantic and
all were either sunk in battle or scuttled by their own crews.
